The purpose of this project is to engage 7th-grade students in a hands-on, real-world learning experience by creating a travel guide for a summer road trip. Through this project, students will apply mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills to optimize travel routes and costs while exploring historical landmarks. By collaborating with a local travel agency, students will gain insights into professional route planning and cost estimation. This project aims to develop students' abilities to model with mathematics, construct arguments, and reflect on their learning journey, culminating in a community exhibition that showcases their work.
Learning goals
Students will develop problem-solving skills by making sense of travel planning challenges and persevering in optimizing routes and costs. They will reason both abstractly and quantitatively to create viable arguments for their travel choices and critique others' reasoning. Students will model with mathematics by calculating distances and costs, strategically using tools to enhance precision and efficiency. They will identify and utilize structures within road trip planning, expressing regularity in repeated reasoning throughout the project.
Standards
MP.1 - Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP.2 - Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP.3 - Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP.4 - Model with mathematics.
MP.5 - Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP.6 - Attend to precision.
MP.8 - Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
MP.7 - Look for and make use of structure.
Products
Students will collaboratively create a comprehensive travel guide for a summer road trip, featuring detailed maps with optimized routes, cost analyses, and historical landmark highlights. Each guide will include a digital presentation component, such as a slideshow or video, to showcase their findings and reasoning. Additionally, students will produce a reflective visual board capturing their learning journey, which will be displayed during the 'Summer Road Trip Expo'.
Launch
To kick off the project, organize a virtual or in-person meeting with a travel agency representative who can share exciting stories and insights about planning summer road trips. Engage students in an interactive brainstorming session where they identify their favorite summer destinations and discuss what makes a road trip memorable. Facilitate a collaborative activity where students explore maps and begin plotting potential routes, sparking curiosity and excitement for the project ahead.
Exhibition
At the 'Summer Road Trip Expo,' students will present their travel guides through engaging, interactive displays that include detailed maps, cost analyses, and historical narratives. Each group will have a booth to showcase their work, inviting parents, teachers, and community members to explore their creative solutions and mathematical reasoning. The expo will feature live demonstrations of route planning tools and allow attendees to engage with students about their learning process and discoveries.
