Phenomenon

In schools where students actively participate in decision-making, the culture often reflects a stronger sense of community and shared purpose, while schools with top-down governance may struggle with student engagement and ownership. In a new school, the absence of established culture presents a unique opportunity to shape a vibrant and inclusive environment from the ground up.

The Challenge

In new educational environments, establishing a strong school culture and student autonomy from the ground up presents unique challenges, as traditional governance structures often restrict students' ability to actively shape their learning environment. The absence of existing culture and platforms for student voices further complicates efforts to create inclusive, participatory governance systems. How can we design a student-led advisory board, house competition system, and student governance system, that builds strong culture, emphasizes student autonomy, and covers essential competencies?
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.1: Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

What You Will Learn And Do

Identify key elements that contribute to a positive school culture by researching successful models and brainstorming with peers. Explore existing student governance systems and analyze their effectiveness in fostering positive school environments. Design and build a student-led advisory board and governance system, testing and refining your ideas through peer feedback and mentorship from community partners. Present your final proposal to school administrators and community stakeholders, demonstrating how your solution will enhance student autonomy and strengthen school culture.

The Learning Journey

Phases Learning Outcome
Discover
I can explore the potential for creating a positive school culture by researching successful models of student-led advisory boards and governance systems in other schools, identifying key elements that could be adapted to our new school environment.
Examine
I can explore different models of student leadership and autonomy to inform our design process. I can analyze the strengths and weaknesses of existing systems to identify opportunities for improvement. I can gather insights from community partners to enhance our understanding of effective student-led initiatives. I can synthesize research findings to propose innovative solutions for building a positive school culture. I can develop strategic plans for implementing a student advisory board that aligns with our school's values and vision.
Engineer
I can develop and implement a strategic plan to establish a student-led advisory board by creating roles, responsibilities, and timelines, engaging in collaborative debates, and using design techniques to propose improvements that build a new school culture and emphasize student autonomy.
Do
I can implement our advisory board and governance system, gather feedback from peers and mentors, and evaluate its initial impact on shaping school culture before showcasing our findings.
Share
I can share our advisory board and governance system designs through a dynamic presentation to the school community, showcasing our collaborative process, strategic planning, and personal insights, while inviting feedback and discussion to refine our approach.
