Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage high school students in a real-world investigation by designing and implementing their own data collection methods to address a local community issue. By collaborating with community partners, students gain insights into how data informs decision-making and develop skills in data analysis and communication. This project fosters critical thinking and problem-solving, empowering students to propose actionable solutions and effectively communicate their findings to influence change.

Learning goals

Students will develop critical skills in designing and implementing data collection methods tailored to local community issues, enhancing their ability to gather and analyze information effectively. They will learn to communicate their findings clearly and persuasively using digital tools, fostering their ability to influence change or inform others. The project aims to deepen students' understanding of ethical considerations in research and the role of data in decision-making processes, preparing them for real-world applications.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
  • Common Core - CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4: Model with mathematics, applying the mathematics they know to solve problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace.

Products

Students will create a comprehensive digital portfolio that includes their research question, literature review, data collection plan, and analysis. They will develop surveys or interviews tailored to their chosen community issue and use digital tools to visualize their findings. For the Community Solutions Expo, students will design a presentation that combines visual data displays with narrative storytelling to propose actionable solutions. Additionally, students will produce a reflective piece summarizing their learning journey and insights gained throughout the project.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Data Detective Workshop,' where students dive into interactive stations exploring various data collection methods like surveys, interviews, and observations. Encourage them to brainstorm pressing questions about their local community, fostering a collaborative environment where they can share ideas and refine their focus. This hands-on experience sets the stage for students to start thinking critically about their research questions and the methods they'll employ throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will participate in a 'Community Solutions Expo,' collaborating with local business partners to present their research findings and propose actionable solutions to local issues. Each group will set up an interactive booth where they can engage visitors with their data collection methods, visualizations, and narratives. This event will provide an opportunity for students to articulate their insights and receive feedback from community members, fostering a dialogue on potential impacts and changes.
