Purpose

This project aims to engage high school students in a hands-on, interdisciplinary exploration of piñata creation, integrating NGSS standards with math and literacy. Students will design and construct piñatas that reflect their favorite animals or characters, utilizing geometric shapes and color theory. The project encourages collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking as students measure, compare, and articulate their design choices, culminating in a showcase of their personalized creations.

Learning goals

Students will design and construct a piñata that reflects their favorite animal or character, integrating geometry to calculate and compare the necessary shapes and dimensions. They will apply NGSS standards by exploring materials and structures, understanding the properties of matter, and demonstrating the engineering design process. Additionally, students will enhance their literacy skills by researching and presenting their piñata's cultural significance and the story behind their chosen theme.

Standards
  • NGSS - HS-ETS1-2: Design a solution to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable problems that can be solved through engineering.
  • Common Core - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.1: Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

Products

Students will create a personalized piñata that embodies their favorite animal or character, utilizing a variety of geometric shapes and vibrant colors. Throughout the project, they will maintain a design journal documenting their planning, measurement calculations, and reflections on the construction process. By the end of the project, students will present their piñatas along with an accompanying written narrative that explains their design choices and the mathematical concepts applied.

Launch

Begin the project with an engaging activity where students explore various piñata designs and their cultural significance through a virtual gallery walk. Encourage students to discuss their favorite animals or characters and how these could be represented in a piñata. Facilitate a brainstorming session where students sketch initial ideas, focusing on the shapes and colors they might use. Conclude the launch by introducing the essential questions and outlining the project goals, emphasizing the integration of math and literacy skills.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Piñata Showcase" where they display their creations, each accompanied by a presentation that highlights the design process, mathematical calculations, and the story behind their chosen animal or character. Invite peers, teachers, and family members to participate in a gallery walk, where students can explain the significance of their piñata's colors and shapes. Incorporate a feedback session where attendees can ask questions and provide positive input, encouraging students to reflect on their learning journey and the skills they developed.
