Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage 6th-grade students in a deeper exploration of the factors that contributed to the success of the Roman Empire, using the GRAPES framework. By researching and presenting on specific categories—Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics, Economy, and Social Structure—students will develop critical thinking, collaboration, and presentation skills. The project aims to foster an understanding of how these elements interacted to create a powerful civilization, encouraging students to draw connections between historical insights and their own learning. Through activities like the 'Roman Forum' discussion and reflective exercises, students will not only analyze historical successes and failures but also apply these lessons to envision future civilizations, preparing them for their upcoming civilization-building project. This approach promotes a comprehensive understanding of interconnectedness and the complexities of societal development, aligning with educational goals of deeper learning and project-based inquiry.

Learning goals

In this project, students will delve into the factors that contributed to the success of the Roman Empire using the GRAPES framework, enhancing their understanding of historical analysis and critical thinking. They will develop research skills by investigating their assigned GRAPES category and synthesizing information into a visual summary. Through collaboration and presentation, students will refine their communication skills and learn to articulate their findings effectively. The project encourages students to draw connections between different historical factors, fostering an appreciation for the complexity and interdependence of societal elements. By reflecting on the Roman Empire's achievements and failures, students will gain insights that can be applied to their future civilization-building project, promoting creative thinking and the ability to apply historical lessons to contemporary scenarios. This project aligns with the goal of cultivating a deeper understanding of history and its relevance to modern-day challenges.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.7: Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.6.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.7: Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and refocusing the inquiry when appropriate.

Products

In this project, students will work collaboratively in groups to create a one-page visual summary, such as a poster, infographic, or slide, that encapsulates their research on an assigned GRAPES category of the Roman Empire. Each group will deliver a 3-minute presentation to share their findings with the class, enhancing their communication and presentation skills. Additionally, students will participate in a "Roman Forum" class discussion to debate and analyze which GRAPES category was most crucial to Rome's success, fostering critical thinking and the ability to draw connections between different historical factors. The project will culminate in the creation of a digital portfolio, where students compile their research, visual summaries, and reflections, showcasing their understanding of the Roman Empire's success and their personal growth throughout the project. This experience will prepare students for their upcoming civilization-building project by applying historical insights to future scenarios.

Launch

To kick off the project, organize a "Roman Mystery Unveiling" event. Begin by dimming the lights and playing ambient Roman music to set the atmosphere. Introduce a mysterious artifact box, dramatically unveiling replicas of Roman artifacts, each symbolizing a different GRAPES category. As you reveal each artifact, provide a brief, intriguing story or fact about its significance to the Roman Empire. Assign each group an artifact related to their GRAPES category, sparking curiosity and excitement. Encourage students to speculate how their artifact might have contributed to Rome's success, setting the stage for their research journey. This immersive experience will engage students' love for mystery and investigation, linking their interests to the project and motivating them to delve deeper into their assigned topics.

Exhibition

To culminate the project, host a "Roman Empire Exhibition Day" where students showcase their visual summaries and deliver their presentations to an audience of peers, teachers, and family members. Set up the classroom as a Roman Forum, with each group having a designated area to display their work. Invite attendees to engage with students by asking questions and providing feedback. Additionally, incorporate an interactive element where visitors can vote on which GRAPES category they believe was most influential in Rome's success, sparking further discussion and reflection. This exhibition not only celebrates students' learning but also encourages them to articulate their insights and connect with a broader audience.
