Designing Our Dream School: Creative Learning Journey
Purpose

Learning goals
In this project, students will explore the evolution and purpose of education across different cultures and time periods. Products
In this project, students will engage in a multifaceted exploration of the history and purpose of school through time and across cultures. They will produce several key deliverables:
1. **Comparative Analysis Report**: Each student will create a report comparing different educational systems they have studied, focusing on the who, what, when, where, and why of schools in various contexts. This report will include insights from community partner visits and interviews with elders.
2. **Reflective Journal**: Students will maintain a reflective journal throughout the project, documenting their experiences, challenges, and personal growth. This journal will serve as a basis for their final reflection on the skills they have practiced and the relevance of these skills in the broader context of education.
3. **Model School Schedule and Building Design**: In groups, students will design a model schedule and a conceptual model of a school building that reflects their understanding of an ideal educational environment. Launch
To launch the project, start with an immersive "School Time Travel Day." Transform the classroom into a time machine by decorating it with artifacts and visuals representing different eras and cultures of schooling. Begin with a brief, engaging presentation that highlights key moments in the history of education worldwide. Invite students to dress up as students from different time periods and regions, and assign them roles to play throughout the day.
After the presentation, divide students into small groups and assign each group a specific era or culture to research and present. Provide them with materials to create a visual or dramatic representation of their assigned period, such as posters, skits, or digital presentations. Encourage creativity and artistic expression.
Conclude the day with a gallery walk where students showcase their work, allowing them to share insights and reflect on how education has evolved. This hands-on, arts-oriented activity will engage students and set the stage for deeper exploration of the essential question, "What is school for?"
Exhibition
At the end of the project, students will participate in an exhibition that showcases their understanding of the history and purpose of school. This will include creating a model schedule and a model school building that reflects their learning and insights. The exhibition will be a hands-on, interactive event where students present their models and discuss the rationale behind their designs.
