Opinion Quest: Explore and Express Together!
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to engage third-grade students in developing their opinion writing skills by analyzing and expressing their viewpoints on various media, including videos, articles, and books. Through collaborative pair work, students will learn to articulate their opinions with supporting reasons, enhancing their critical thinking and collaboration skills. The project aims to guide students in constructing well-organized written opinions and presenting their ideas effectively. By the end of the two-week period, students will have created a graphic organizer and delivered a presentation, showcasing their ability to form and communicate a reasoned opinion.
Learning goals
In this project, students will learn to articulate their opinions by engaging with various media, such as videos, articles, and books. They will develop skills in opinion writing by identifying and supporting their viewpoints with clear, reasoned arguments. Through collaboration with peers, students will enhance their communication and teamwork abilities. Critical thinking will be fostered as students analyze content, formulating and refining their opinions. The project will culminate in a short written piece and a presentation, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding and express their opinions effectively. Additionally, students will use graphic organizers to visually map out their ideas, aiding in the organization and clarity of their arguments.

Products
In this project, third-grade students will create a series of opinion pieces based on their analysis of videos, articles, and books. Each student will develop a short written opinion supported by at least three reasons, which they will organize using a graphic organizer. Students will then present their opinions in pairs, enhancing their collaboration and critical thinking skills. The project will culminate in a classroom exhibition where students showcase their graphic organizers and deliver their presentations to peers, demonstrating their ability to articulate and defend their opinions. This process will not only improve their opinion writing skills but also their ability to critically evaluate different media and express their thoughts clearly.
Launch
To kick off the project, begin with an engaging multimedia experience. Show a short, captivating video clip that presents a thought-provoking topic relevant to third graders, such as the importance of recycling or the benefits of reading. After viewing, facilitate a class discussion where students share their initial opinions and reasons. Encourage them to think about how different types of media (videos, articles, books) can influence their opinions. This activity will not only spark interest but also set the stage for exploring how to develop and articulate their opinions using various sources.
Exhibition
At the culmination of the project, students will have the opportunity to showcase their learning through a dual-format exhibition. Each student will present their opinion writing in a short presentation to their peers, highlighting the reasons and evidence that support their opinion. This will foster public speaking skills and confidence. Additionally, students will create a graphic organizer that visually represents their thought process and reasoning. These graphic organizers will be displayed in a classroom gallery walk, allowing students to observe and reflect on the diverse perspectives and approaches of their classmates. This exhibition format not only celebrates their written and oral communication skills but also emphasizes the importance of collaboration and critical thinking in developing well-rounded opinions.
