"Building Bridges: Uniting Korea's Future"

Justin Rhodes

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage 11th-grade students in a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in the hypothetical reunification of North and South Korea. By developing a comprehensive plan for governmental reunification, students will explore critical areas such as economic integration, educational advancement, infrastructure development, military service laws, and diplomatic relations with China. This project aims to foster critical thinking, research skills, and collaborative problem-solving as students work together to create a cohesive plan that addresses the challenges and opportunities of reunification. Through this process, students will gain insights into modern-day Korea, enhance their understanding of historical and contemporary issues, and develop strategies for sustainable growth in a unified Korea. The project culminates in a presentation, allowing students to articulate their findings and solutions, while also reflecting on their learning journey and teamwork.

Learning goals

In this project, students will explore the complexities of reunifying North and South Korea by developing a comprehensive plan that addresses key areas such as economic integration, educational advancement, infrastructure development, military service laws, and diplomatic relations. Students will gain an understanding of the historical context of the Korean War and its impact on modern-day Korea. They will engage in research to understand the current socio-economic and political landscape of both North and South Korea, and use this knowledge to propose viable strategies for reunification. Through collaboration and critical thinking, students will enhance their ability to analyze complex issues and communicate their ideas effectively. The project will culminate in a presentation, allowing students to articulate their findings and reflect on their learning experiences.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
  • C3 Framework for Social Studies - D2.Civ.6.9-12: Analyze the purposes, implementation, and consequences of public policies in multiple settings.

Products

In this project, students will work collaboratively to develop a comprehensive reunification plan for North and South Korea. Their primary product will be a detailed presentation, either in Google Slides or PowerPoint, that outlines their proposed strategies for economic integration, educational advancement, infrastructure development, military service laws, and diplomatic relations with China. This presentation will serve as both a summative assessment and a showcase of their understanding and creativity in addressing the complexities of reunification. Additionally, students will engage in reflective practices to evaluate their teamwork and personal learning growth, particularly focusing on new insights gained about modern-day Korea. The project will culminate in a presentation day where students will present their findings to their peers, simulating a real-world policy proposal scenario.

Launch

To effectively launch this project, begin by screening a school-safe documentary that provides a comprehensive overview of the Korean War, highlighting the historical context and the division between North and South Korea. This will establish a foundational understanding for students. If possible, enhance this experience by inviting a Korean War veteran to share personal insights and experiences, offering a human perspective on the conflict and its long-term implications. This combination of visual and personal storytelling will engage students emotionally and intellectually, setting the stage for their exploration of reunification strategies.

Exhibition

To exhibit the students' work effectively, organize a "Korean Reunification Summit" day at school. Invite other classes, teachers, and administrators to attend the presentations. Set up a conference-style environment where each student group presents their Google Slideshow or PowerPoint as if they are presenting to a panel of international diplomats. Encourage students to dress in professional attire to enhance the authenticity of the experience. To add depth, consider inviting a guest speaker, such as a historian or a Korean War veteran, to provide opening remarks or feedback. This exhibition will allow students to showcase their research, critical thinking, and presentation skills while engaging the school community in a meaningful dialogue about the complexities of Korean reunification.
