Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage 12th-grade students in a comprehensive exploration of the fast fashion industry and its environmental impact, while empowering them to become agents of change through upcycling. By investigating consumer behavior, students will gain insights into the economic and psychological factors driving fast fashion demand. Partnering with a local thrift store, they will acquire materials and learn about the importance of reusing garments. Through hands-on activities, students will develop skills in sewing, fabric manipulation, and creative design to transform old clothes into new, functional items. The project aims to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills as students reflect on their learning journey, culminating in a 'Community Upcycle Day' to share their creations and knowledge with the community. This initiative not only raises awareness about sustainable fashion but also encourages students to adopt more environmentally conscious behaviors in their own lives.

Learning goals

In this project, students will explore the intersection of consumer behavior and the fast fashion industry, gaining insights into how marketing strategies and consumer psychology drive demand for low-cost, high-turnover clothing. They will develop practical skills in sewing, fabric manipulation, and creative design, enabling them to transform old garments into new, functional, and aesthetically pleasing items. Through collaboration with a local thrift store, students will learn about the lifecycle of clothing and the importance of reusing garments, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainability. By engaging in peer review sessions, students will enhance their ability to critique and refine their designs, focusing on functionality and sustainability. The project will culminate in a 'Community Upcycle Day,' where students will apply their learning by teaching community members upcycling techniques and showcasing their creations, promoting sustainable fashion practices. Throughout the project, students will document their journey in a digital portfolio, reflecting on their evolving understanding of consumer behavior and sustainability, and setting future goals for sustainable choices.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Products

In this project, students will create upcycled garments by transforming old clothes into new, functional, and aesthetically pleasing items. They will organize a pop-up shop event to sell these creations, with proceeds supporting environmental charities focused on reducing textile waste. Additionally, students will launch a social media campaign featuring before-and-after photos of their upcycled garments, coupled with educational content about sustainable fashion and consumer behavior's impact on the industry. This campaign aims to raise awareness and inspire more sustainable choices within the community. Through these activities, students will develop skills in sewing, fabric manipulation, and creative design, while deepening their understanding of consumer behavior and sustainability. The project will culminate in a 'Community Upcycle Day,' where students will host workshops to teach community members upcycling techniques and exhibit their creations, fostering community engagement and shared responsibility in addressing clothing waste.

Launch

To kick off the project, organize a "Closet Clean-Out Challenge" where students bring in old clothes from home. Begin with an engaging presentation on the fast fashion industry's impact on the environment and consumer behavior. Then, facilitate a collaborative brainstorming session where students explore creative upcycling ideas for the collected garments. This activity will not only foster a sense of community and shared purpose but also set the stage for students to think critically about sustainable fashion solutions. Conclude the launch with a visit to the local thrift store, allowing students to gain insights into the lifecycle of clothing and the importance of reusing garments, while also gathering additional materials for their upcycling projects.

Exhibition

To effectively showcase the students' learning and achievements, the project will culminate in a 'Community Upcycle Day.' This event will be a vibrant celebration of creativity and sustainability, where students will collaborate with a local thrift store to host interactive workshops. During these workshops, students will teach community members how to upcycle their own clothing, sharing skills and insights gained throughout the project. The day will feature a group exhibition displaying all the upcycled creations made by the students, highlighting their journey from understanding fast fashion to creating sustainable garments. Additionally, a pop-up shop will be organized where students can sell their upcycled items, with proceeds supporting environmental charities. This exhibition will not only demonstrate students' craftsmanship and understanding of sustainable fashion but also engage the community in meaningful dialogue about consumer behavior and its impact on the environment.
