"Impactful Pioneers: Celebrating Change Through Art"
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to honor and celebrate the significant contributions of African American mathematicians, historians, scientists, writers, and artists through creative expression. By engaging in research and collaborative work, students will deepen their understanding of how these figures have shaped our world today. Through the exploration of diverse perspectives and teamwork, students will enhance their socio-emotional skills and develop a greater appreciation for the impact of African American pioneers. The project culminates in a 'Voices of Change Gallery Walk,' where students present their creative expressions, fostering a sense of community and recognition for their efforts and learning.
Learning goals
In this project, students will develop research and writing skills by investigating the significant contributions of African American mathematicians, historians, scientists, writers, and artists. They will enhance their ability to analyze information, synthesize their findings, and communicate their understanding through creative expression. Students will also build collaboration skills by working in groups, learning to appreciate diverse perspectives, and reflecting on how these experiences contribute to their socio-emotional development. Through the 'Voices of Change Gallery Walk,' students will practice public speaking and presentation skills, gaining confidence in sharing their insights with the school community. This project empowers students to take ownership of their learning by allowing them to choose a figure of personal interest and decide on their mode of artistic representation, fostering creativity and critical thinking.
Standards
- Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.7: Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
- Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.4: Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
- Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.5: Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
Products
In this project, students will engage in a collaborative exploration of African American figures who have made significant contributions to various fields. Each student will select an individual of personal interest to research, focusing on their impact and legacy. The primary product will be a creative artistic representation of their chosen figure, designed on a ceiling tile. Students can express their understanding through painting, collage, or mixed media, allowing for personal expression and creativity. Additionally, students will develop a written piece, such as a poem or short essay, that captures the essence of their figure's contributions. The culmination of the project will be a 'Voices of Change Gallery Walk,' where students will showcase their ceiling tile artwork and accompanying written pieces to the school community. This exhibition will serve as an opportunity for students to share their learning, receive feedback, and celebrate the diverse contributions of African American pioneers. Through this project, students will enhance their research and writing skills, deepen their understanding of teamwork and diverse perspectives, and develop socio-emotional competencies by reflecting on the impact of these historical figures.
Launch
To kick off the project, start with an engaging "Gallery of Giants" experience. Transform the classroom into a mini-museum with stations dedicated to various African American mathematicians, historians, scientists, writers, and artists. Each station can feature a brief biography, notable achievements, and a thought-provoking question related to their impact. As students rotate through the stations, they can jot down initial impressions, questions, and connections they make. This immersive experience will spark curiosity and provide a foundation for their research. Conclude the launch with a class discussion on the essential question: "How have African American figures shaped our world today?" This will set the stage for deeper exploration and creative expression throughout the project.
Exhibition
To culminate the project, organize a "Voices of Change Gallery Walk," where students showcase their creative expressions inspired by African American pioneers. This exhibition can include poems, art pieces, or digital presentations, displayed throughout the school or a designated space. Invite the school community, local artists, and family members to attend, providing an opportunity for students to share their work and receive feedback. This event not only celebrates the students' learning but also fosters a sense of community and appreciation for the contributions of African American figures. Encourage students to engage with visitors, explaining their research process and the significance of their chosen figures, enhancing their communication skills and confidence.

Activities |
Activity 1: Engage students with the 'Gallery of Giants' experience by setting up stations with information about various African American figures in mathematics, history, science, literature, and art. Students will rotate through these stations, take notes, and jot down their initial impressions.
|
Activity 2: Facilitate a class discussion centered around the essential question: 'How have African American figures shaped our world today?' Encourage students to share their thoughts and connections from the 'Gallery of Giants' experience.
|
Activity 3: Assign students to select an African American figure of personal interest for their research project. Provide time for students to begin preliminary research, gathering basic information and identifying potential sources.
|
Activity 4: Conduct a research skills workshop, teaching students how to find reliable sources, take effective notes, and organize their research. Include a mini-lesson on summarizing information and citing sources correctly.
|
Activity 5: Have students form small collaborative groups to share their chosen figures, discuss their initial findings, and plan their research strategies moving forward.
|
Deliverables |
1. Deliverable 1: Students will submit a list of at least three reliable sources they plan to use for their research.
