Alessandra Vela

Purpose

This project is designed to immerse students in the Italian language, fostering a deeper understanding of its pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Through the creation of a learning journal and the facilitation of a brief Italian lesson, students will actively engage in language acquisition while exploring the cultural and societal contexts of Italy. The project aims to answer essential questions about language learning, identity, and effective strategies in the digital age. By collaborating with community partners such as Duolingo and utilizing multimedia resources, students will develop language skills and reflect on their learning processes. The project also emphasizes critical thinking and self-assessment, as students evaluate their progress and refine their approaches to mastering a new language.

Learning goals

In this project, students will embark on a journey to learn the Italian language and explore its cultural significance. They will focus on understanding the pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar of Italian, while also delving into the cultural context of Italy to enrich their language learning experience. Through the creation of a learning journal, students will document their progress, reflect on effective learning strategies, and evaluate their growth. By engaging with community partners such as Duolingo and Italian media, students will develop digital-age language learning skills. The project culminates in an exhibition where students share their journals and conduct a brief Italian lesson, demonstrating their language acquisition and teaching skills. Throughout the project, students will address essential questions about language learning, its impact on identity and global citizenship, and the most effective strategies for mastering a new language.

Products

In this project, students will create a comprehensive learning journal that documents their journey of learning Italian. This journal will include daily entries reflecting on their progress, challenges, and strategies used. Additionally, students will develop and deliver a brief Italian lesson to peers, showcasing their understanding of the language's pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. This lesson will serve as an exhibition of their learning and an opportunity to teach others. Throughout the project, students will engage with community partners such as Duolingo and Italian media resources to enhance their language acquisition. By the end of the six-week period, students will have a tangible product that demonstrates their language learning process and insights into effective language acquisition strategies in the digital age.

Launch

To kick off the project, begin with an immersive cultural experience that introduces students to Italy's rich heritage. Organize a virtual tour of Italy, exploring iconic landmarks, cultural traditions, and regional cuisines. This can be facilitated through interactive online platforms or by inviting a guest speaker who has lived in or traveled extensively through Italy. Following the tour, engage students in a reflective discussion on their initial perceptions of Italy and its language. This will set the stage for understanding the importance of language in cultural identity and global citizenship. Conclude the launch by introducing the essential questions, encouraging students to think about their personal goals for learning Italian and how they can apply this knowledge in real-world contexts.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, students will host an Italian Language and Culture Exhibition. This event will serve as a platform for students to share their learning journals and conduct a brief Italian lesson for attendees, showcasing their understanding of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. The exhibition will include interactive stations where students can teach basic Italian phrases, share insights about Italian culture, and discuss the role of language in shaping identity and global citizenship. Additionally, students will present reflections on their learning journey, highlighting effective strategies and lessons learned. Community partners such as Duolingo and Italian media resources will be acknowledged for their contributions. This exhibition will not only celebrate students' achievements but also engage the school community in appreciating the value of language learning in a globalized world.
