Students will launch the project by examining a volcanic eruption, distinguishing a natural hazard from a disaster, and responding to a city emergency scenario as residents and hazard specialists.

Students will establish a city–hazard investigation, examine how physical processes, geographic exposure, and human vulnerability create risk, and develop a research plan for an evidence-based community safety proposal.

Students will analyze historical hazard data, construct a qualified community-risk forecast, evaluate risk-reduction strategies, and build draft components of a city safety proposal and interactive exhibit. Teams will use emergency-responder input and two rounds of peer feedback to revise their evidence, recommendations, preparedness guidance, and prototype before the showcase phase.

Students will present and defend evidence-based natural-hazard safety proposals to younger students, families, community members, and emergency responders, then reflect on how evidence and feedback shaped their recommendations.
