Students begin with a quick do now in which they identify morphemes they already know and make educated guesses about unfamiliar ones. As a whole class, they build notes on morphology, morphemes, syllables, and the different kinds of bases: free base, bound base, and twin base. The teacher uses the morphemes intro handout to pace the lesson and keep the class working together. Students sort words into roots, affixes, prefixes, bases, and suffixes, then explain how each part helps reveal meaning. Finish by connecting the ideas to etymology: students write one sentence about how knowing morphemes can help them figure out where words come from and what they mean.
