Students will investigate past pinewood derby vehicles with Boy Scouts partners, identify promising design features, and use introductory force-and-motion evidence to establish a measurable team performance goal.

Students will define the pinewood derby challenge by connecting force-and-motion evidence to existing vehicle features, measurable performance criteria, official constraints, stakeholder advice, and a milestone engineering design brief.

Students will compare how pinewood derby design features influence motion, create three evidence-based concepts, use weighted criteria to select a team design, and pass a build-readiness checkpoint before prototyping.

Students will build a selected pinewood derby design, complete controlled baseline and revised tests, use classmate and Boy Scouts feedback to improve one variable, and prepare quantitative evidence for the race exhibition and oral defense.

Students will refine their evidence-based design explanations with feedback from classmates and Boy Scouts partners, present and race their final pinewood derby vehicles, and reflect on how testing, persistence, teamwork, and problem-solving shaped their results.
