Students will launch the place value investigation by analyzing real-world numbers, recording first observations in their Decimal Detective Investigation Notebook, and using peer discussion, math journals, exit slips, and whole-group reflection to generate evidence-based questions for the next phase.

Students will investigate place value puzzles from real-world numbers, refine a focused question, form a testable hypothesis, and build a peer-reviewed plan for collecting evidence with models, equations, and math journal documentation.

Students will gather and document mathematical evidence from real-world number situations, using place value reasoning to record calculations, models, rounding decisions, and patterns clearly in their math journals. They will test whether their methods produce traceable, believable results, revise weak documentation after peer critique, and complete a midpoint checkpoint before moving into analysis.

Students will analyze their investigation evidence with tables, number lines, and models; test whether their claims are supported by the data; explain patterns and anomalies using place value reasoning; revise a team Number Sense Guide based on peer critique; and share findings in a structured peer exhibition with clear conclusions, limitations, and next questions.

Students will present their Real-World Place Value Number Sense Guide and Showcase Display to an authentic audience, respond to questions with evidence from their investigation, use peer feedback to strengthen communication, and complete a final reflection and assessment in math journals and exit slips.
