Students will launch the investigation by exploring who gained or lost access to jobs, goods, and travel as steam railroads expanded, then begin an evidence-based inquiry record with an initial social-group question and documented observations.

Students will refine a focused investigation question about a specific social group, test possible methods for gathering evidence, and produce a peer-reviewed evidence plan with a documentation system they can use in the next phase.

Students will gather and verify traceable evidence for their railroad case studies by analyzing sources, logging notes with complete source information, checking for contradictory or missing evidence, and completing a midpoint quality gate before moving into full interpretation.

Students will analyze patterns in their railroad evidence, test their interpretations with peers and a community expert, and build revised museum-display components that communicate how access to jobs, goods, and travel changed for different social groups.

Students will present their completed railroad case studies and museum displays to an authentic audience, defend their conclusions with source-based evidence, and reflect on how transportation access shaped opportunity and exclusion in the past and today.
