Students will step into the role of genetic counselors by analyzing a clinic communication problem, identifying who is affected, and generating evidence-based questions and user insights that will guide later genetics research and design work.

Students will investigate the science and human context behind inherited traits, mutation, cell division, reproduction, and trait probability while gathering user-centered evidence from clinic-style cases and expert feedback. They will evaluate sources, analyze causes of misunderstanding in healthcare settings, and use evidence to propose a scientifically accurate, patient-friendly direction for their genetic counseling kit.

Engineer
Students will translate their genetics research into a patient-friendly advisory kit by studying effective clinic communication tools, planning and building low-fidelity prototypes, testing them with peers and an external counseling perspective, and revising flowcharts, prompts, and feedback tools based on evidence and health literacy needs.

Students will implement and test their family-friendly genetic counseling kits with users, collect evidence about how well families can interpret trait risk and variation, and use feedback to justify revisions and claims about effectiveness.
