Launch
Launch
Students will launch the investigation by observing hawk clues in city images and artifacts, sorting evidence about food, water, and shelter, generating shared wonder questions, and making first drawings of safe city spaces for hawks. They will begin using partner talk, picture evidence, and simple revision routines to prepare for later habitat observations.
Days 1 - 4
City Hawk Surprise
City Hawk Surprise
Students will examine city hawk clues through images, movement, artifacts, and talk; sort evidence about food, water, and shelter; compare ideas with peers; and co-create an investigable class question and simple hypothesis about how hawks survive in urban places.
Days 5 - 9
Plan Evidence Collection
Plan Evidence Collection
Students will co-create a simple investigation plan for observing where hawks might find food, water, and shelter in city spaces. They will practice using drawings, labels, photo choices, and partner talk to record evidence clearly, choose neighborhood places to check, and revise their observation method before going into the field.
Days 10 - 14
Observe Urban Habitats
Observe Urban Habitats
Students will observe city spaces with partners and community experts, record evidence with sketches and oral language, compare patterns in possible hawk habitats, and add revised findings to a shared class booklet or mural.
Days 15 - 19
Check Evidence Quality
Check Evidence Quality
Students will review hawk investigation evidence from walks, photos, sketches, and notebook entries to check whether each record matches the class question. They will compare observed facts with guesses, revise records with peer feedback, organize habitat clues into categories, and complete a teacher-observed checkpoint before moving on to explanation work.
Days 20 - 24
Share Habitat Findings
Share Habitat Findings
Students will organize observation evidence into clear habitat patterns, turn those patterns into maps and exhibit visuals, practice explaining what they know with classmates, revise their work after feedback, and complete a verbal/drawing-based checkpoint before the museum showcase.
Days 25 - 29
Showcase
Showcase
Students will guide guests through the Hawks in Our Neighborhood Museum, use drawings, maps, models, and oral language to explain how hawks survive in city spaces, and reflect on how their evidence and ideas changed across the investigation.
