# What teachers do
1 [Gather and notice] Sit in a circle by the soil tray. Look at the two farm parts, touch the air above them without touching the tray, and use your finger to point to what you see: bare soil, plants, crops, and water cups. The teacher shows picture cards for soil, rain, plant, muddy water, farm, and farmer while the 4-H visitor says, "Today we will watch what rain does to land." (8 min)
2 [Predict with your body] Stand up for a quick move break. Put your hands on your head if you think bare soil will move more, or put your hands on your shoulders if you think plant-covered soil will stay in place more, then turn and tell a partner, "I think ____." (5 min)
3 [Watch the rain test] Sit or kneel where you can see. Watch the teacher and 4-H visitor pour matching cups of water at the same time on the bare soil and plant-covered soil, then point right away to where the water goes and where the soil moves. (8 min)
4 [Talk about what changed] Use simple words, gestures, or picture cards to share what you noticed: muddy water, moving soil, plant roots, or soil staying put. The teacher takes photos and writes student words and dictated phrases on a class chart with two headings: "We Notice" and "We Wonder." (8 min)
5 [Think about who cares] Stand and do a short stretch like growing corn, then sit with a partner. Look at photos or picture cards of a farmer, family, crops, animals, creek, and tractor and say who might care when soil washes away and why. (6 min)
6 [Make the class launch record] As a group, choose 2-3 strongest notices and 2-3 wonders for the chart. Help the teacher label photos from the rain test and add one class idea about what helped keep soil in place so the 4-H visitor can hear your thinking. (6 min)
7 [Share and close] Tell the 4-H visitor one thing you saw by speaking, pointing, or using a picture card. End with a quick thumbs-up, side, or down to show how ready you are to keep studying how to protect farm soil. (4 min)
Preparation (10 items)
  • Build one soil tray model with two clear sections: one bare soil section and one plant-covered section with grass, moss, or rooted seedlings. Slightly tilt the tray so runoff can be seen safely in collection bins.
  • Measure and label two matching cups or watering containers so each side gets the same amount of water during the rain simulation.
  • Prepare a simple visual vocabulary set with pictures or real objects for soil, rain, plant, roots, muddy water, farm, farmer, crops, creek, and animals.
  • Create a class anchor chart with large headings: "We Notice," "We Wonder," and "Who Cares?" Leave space for photos and dictated student phrases.
  • Print or display partner/client visuals, including a photo of the local 4-H Extension visitor and local farms, so students connect the activity to real people in their community.
  • Set out photo documentation tools such as a tablet or camera and sticky notes for quick student quotes that can be added to the chart during the lesson.
  • Prepare picture cards or icons students can hold up to communicate observations and ideas, especially for students who need language support.
  • Place towels, a floor mat, and a spill tub near the model to keep the area safe and to make cleanup fast after pouring water.
  • Review the demonstration plan with the 4-H Extension visitor so they know when to introduce the local farming connection, when to pour water, and when to listen to student ideas.
  • Arrange students so all can see the tray clearly, with front spots for younger learners or students who need closer visual access.
Student-facing instructions
You will sit with your class around a mini farm model and watch what happens when rain falls on bare soil and on soil with plants. You will use your eyes, ears, hands, and words to notice where the water goes, where the soil moves, and what stays in place. You may point, talk, choose a picture card, or tell the teacher a sentence to write down. You will also think about who cares when farm soil washes away, like farmers, families, animals, or people near a creek. Your materials are the farm model, picture cards, class charts, and photos. Your goal is to notice what rain does to land and help make a class record of what you notice and wonder.
