🏛️ Old Town Altar Observation Walk

Students examine artifacts, altar images, and museum staff commentary from Old Town San Diego State Historic Park through a guided walk or virtual gallery sequence. They capture observation notes in a sketchbook using three columns: symbol/material, visual details, and possible meaning, then identify local traditions they may reference later in their altar designs. The class closes by surfacing assumptions about Día de los Muertos and replacing them with evidence from the visit.
