Students begin the project with the field experience hook at the Kumeyaay Museum or a local powwow, documenting artifacts, land relationships, stories, and examples of survivance in a fieldnotes template. Back in a whole-class debrief, they surface patterns, questions, and tensions connected to land, culture, and historical representation. The teacher introduces the driving questions, final class book, public debate, community interviews, photo journal, volunteer component, and revision expectations.
