Purpose

Students investigate how geometry helps people design and improve real spaces by measuring, modeling, and revising shapes they can see in their school or community. Through hands-on stations, model building, mapping, and short design challenges, they classify 2D and 3D figures, measure angles, and calculate area, circumference, surface area, and volume with accuracy. The work leads to a public gallery walk where they explain their models, defend their calculations, and show how critique and revision improved their final product. Along the way, students strengthen mathematical readiness and reflective habits by setting goals, checking their progress, and making responsible decisions about their designs.

Learning goals

Students will identify, classify, and represent 2D and 3D figures using sides, angles, faces, edges, and vertices in models, drawings, and classroom objects. They will measure, estimate, and compare angles and dimensions accurately, then apply those measurements to solve short design problems involving area, surface area, circumference, and volume. Students will compose, decompose, and transform geometric figures to explain relationships between shapes and revise their models when dimensions change. They will communicate mathematical thinking during performance checks, exit showcases, and the gallery walk, reflecting on errors, improvements, and progress over the project.

Products

Students will create a sequence of draft artifacts during the project, including angle-and-dimension station recordings, labeled paper or digital sketches of 2D and 3D figures, measurement notes, and short exit showcase posters or slides that capture one applied geometry task, one correction, and the next revision step. As a culminating product, each student or team will build and revise one real-world geometry model such as a community shelter or tiny house, a neighborhood walking path map, or a scale mini-park, with clearly labeled sides, angles, faces, edges, vertices, and accurate calculations for area, surface area, circumference, and volume. They will also prepare a brief gallery walk display card or digital explanation that shows how shapes were transformed, composed, or decomposed and how measurement changes improved accuracy.

Launch

Start with an Angle Attack Station Sprint where students rotate through 4–5 quick challenges using classroom objects, models, and photos to identify and classify 2D and 3D figures, count faces/edges/vertices, and estimate then measure angles with protractors. In teams, they tackle a mini design prompt such as choosing the best angle and shape combinations for a tiny house roof, shelter wall, park feature, or walking path turn, then defend their choices with measurements and geometric vocabulary. End with a brief whole-class reveal of the project products and a notice-and-wonder discussion about where area, circumference, surface area, and volume will matter in making their models accurate. Have each student complete a short entry reflection naming one geometry strength, one skill to improve, and one project idea they want to test during the gallery walk.

Exhibition

Host a Geometry Gallery Walk where students display their revised 3D shelter, tiny house, mini-park, or walking path map with clearly labeled faces, edges, vertices, angles, dimensions, and calculations for area, circumference, surface area, and volume. Invite classmates, families, or another middle school class to rotate through displays while students give short partner talks explaining how they classified shapes, measured accurately, and revised their models after critique. Include a simple visitor feedback form that asks what geometric relationships they noticed and which design change improved accuracy most. End with a brief showcase station where each student solves one applied geometry task on a poster or digital slide and explains their strategy, correction, and growth over the project.
