Students examine a short set of translated primary-source excerpts, photographs, propaganda images, and timeline cards from 1911, the Warlord Era, May Fourth, and the Chinese Civil War. In groups, they sort the sources chronologically, note what each source suggests about authority and legitimacy, and identify one surprising change in everyday life for a specific family or social group. The class closes by comparing competing interpretations from the same evidence set in journals and discussion.
