Students receive a role card for one Chinese family member or social group, then move through a fast gallery walk of event cards, maps, photographs, and brief primary-source excerpts from 1911 through the Cultural Revolution. In small groups, they place the major events in sequence on a desk timeline and discuss how each shift could change their character’s safety, work, status, and identity. The class closes with a whole-group discussion of the driving question, a project overview of the research notebook and storyboard, and a journal entry naming one likely turning point and one investigable question they want to pursue.
