Launch
Students will launch the dramatic writing project by analyzing performed texts, trying core rehearsal and writing routines, gathering first audience insights from peers and a community partner, and producing an initial monologue draft that can be tested, revised, and used to frame later empathy research and design work.
Days 1 - 8

Research & Empathy
Students will gather and analyze firsthand evidence about what audiences, performers, and educators find believable, memorable, and performable in dramatic writing. They will use interviews, observation, comparison of performed texts, and structured feedback cycles to produce an empathy artifact with quotes, insights, needs, and assumptions to test in the next phase.
Days 9 - 21
Synthesize & Define
Synthesize & Define
Students will synthesize user research from earlier interviews, observations, and performance feedback into a clear design direction for a writing-for-performance course sequence. They will cluster evidence, identify audience needs, define a focused problem through a How Might We statement and design brief, and draft a standards-aligned outline that includes monologues, dialogues, scenes, screenplay work, rehearsal routines, critique cycles, and performance checkpoints.

Ideate Multiple Concepts
Students will generate and compare multiple course-design concepts for dramatic writing and performance, using audience evidence, mentor texts, peer critique, and quick concept testing to choose one direction for the next phase.
Days 35 - 47
Prototype & Validate
Prototype & Validate
Students will build and test low-fidelity prototypes of dramatic writing course components, including a sample lesson flow, a workshop routine, and a draft script prompt with performance expectations. Through table reads, peer critique, self-review with recordings, and feedback from outside users, they will complete two documented revision cycles and justify how their changes improve believability, clarity, and audience usefulness.

Refine & Present
Students will refine a higher-quality dramatic writing course prototype by tightening audience-focused writing and performance elements, testing those choices through read-throughs with representative users, and preparing a stakeholder-facing presentation that shows how evidence, critique, revision, and rehearsal shaped final design decisions.

Showcase
Students will finalize and present their dramatic writing and performance work to authentic audiences, use critique to make last revisions, perform polished pieces in class and for community guests, and document how audience response and self-analysis shaped their final artistic choices.
