Preparation (8 items)
- Collect or prepare 3-6 clear photos of actual cafeteria waste or set up a brief, safe visual waste snapshot using clean sample materials that represent common lunch leftovers.
- Create a simple matter-flow map that shows at least two pathways: lunch tray to landfill and lunch tray to compost to soil to plants.
- Post the driving question where all students can see it and prepare a short verbal introduction that connects the activity to the school community and urban ecosystem.
- Set up chart paper with the headings 'Noticed,' 'Wonder,' and 'Who Is Impacted' for each group or for whole-class stations.
- Prepare sticky notes, markers, and clipboards or notebooks so all students can record observations and questions quickly.
- Arrange student groupings in advance to support balanced participation, including strategic pairing for multilingual learners, students who need peer support, and students ready for leadership roles.
- Review classroom norms for evidence-based discussion, listening, and respectful disagreement, and prepare sentence stems such as 'I notice…,' 'I wonder…,' and 'This could affect… because…'.
- Plan how to capture class questions and impact statements for use in the next activity so students can see continuity across the phase.
Student-facing instructions
You will study real evidence of cafeteria food waste and begin defining the compost design challenge. First, you will look closely at photos or a waste snapshot and record only what you can actually observe. Next, you will use a matter-flow map to think about where food goes after lunch and how landfill and compost pathways affect soil, plants, decomposers, people, and the urban ecosystem. Then, with your group, you will sort your ideas into three categories: 'Noticed,' 'Wonder,' and 'Who Is Impacted' using sticky notes or chart paper. During the share-out, you will read other groups' thinking, add connections, and help identify the most important patterns and questions to investigate next. You will need the displayed images or waste snapshot, the matter-flow map, sticky notes, markers, and your notebook. Your goal is to build a strong set of evidence-based observations, questions, and impact ideas that will help your class design a compost system for the school.
