Students begin with a River LA guest speaker who shares photos, maps, and short community stories about the Los Angeles River’s history, habitats, pollution, runoff, access, and neighborhood use. As a whole class, students sort observations into people, animals, and places, then move into small groups to analyze one mini case showing how city, county, state, and federal agencies shape water quality or availability decisions. Students finish by adding at least two questions and one evidence-based initial claim to a living wall and the before-learning reflection wall that will be revisited later in the project.
