Students practice a color-coded annotation routine on a short source set using highlighters, sticky notes, and a shared coding key. The teacher models how to separate direct evidence from interpretation and how to flag perspective and purpose without jumping to conclusions. Students then annotate a second source in pairs and compare where their coding matches or differs.
