Students rotate through three short stations using base-ten pieces, quick area model sketches, partial products, and the standard algorithm to solve or inspect the same multiplication challenge. In pairs, they use a simple checklist to confirm accuracy, place value, and explanation quality at each stop, then revise one response before moving on. The class closes with a Math Detective discussion in which students highlight where regrouping and place value appear, connect the standard algorithm to familiar strategies, and write an initial claim plus one investigable question in their Multiplication Investigation Notebook.

Preparation (9 items)
- Choose one grade-appropriate multiplication problem that can be represented clearly with an area model, partial products, and the standard algorithm.
- Set up three clearly labeled stations with needed materials: base-ten pieces and recording sheet for the area model station, partial products recording template for the second station, and standard algorithm template for the third station.
- Prepare a simple partner checklist with three look-fors: the answer is accurate, place value is shown correctly, and the explanation uses clear math words.
- Create or copy brief station cards with 1-2 sentence directions and sentence starters such as "I notice...," "This digit stands for...," and "This method is efficient because...."
- Prepare Multiplication Investigation Notebooks or notebook slips with two prompts: "My current claim is..." and "One question I want to investigate is...."
- Post a class anchor chart or slide with the essential question and key vocabulary: place value, regrouping, partial products, algorithm, and efficient.
- Pre-sort student pairs with attention to language support, confidence level, and work pace so rotations move smoothly.
- Plan a visible timer and rotation signal, and place materials in bins so students can move quickly between stations without losing time.
- Prepare one sample incorrect solution for quick facilitator use in case students need support spotting a place-value or regrouping error during discussion.
Student-facing instructions
You will work with a partner to investigate one multiplication problem in three different ways: an area model, partial products, and the standard algorithm. At each station, your task is to solve the problem or inspect the method, talk with your partner about where place value shows up, and use the checklist to make sure your work is accurate, clearly labeled, and easy to explain. You will need station materials, a pencil, the partner checklist, and your Multiplication Investigation Notebook. After each station, you will revise one part of your work before rotating. At the end, you will join the Math Detective discussion, then write one claim about which method seems most efficient or easiest to explain and one question you want to investigate next.
