Preparation (8 items)
- Prepare a feedback anchor chart with the three categories: clarity, balance, and mathematical accuracy, plus simple definitions and sentence starters for giving kind, specific feedback.
- Create and copy a team feedback tracker with columns for feedback received, revision decision, math evidence, and update completed.
- Set up gallery walk spaces around the room so each team can display its menu poster draft and students can rotate safely with clipboards or sticky notes.
- Provide color-coded sticky notes or labels so feedback from peers and the cafeteria staff member can be easily identified during sorting and revision.
- Gather math support tools such as fraction strips, number lines, grid paper, arrays/area model templates, place-value charts, calculators only if used for checking by the facilitator, and markers for revising posters.
- Invite and brief the cafeteria staff member on the activity goal, the feedback categories, and a few sample questions to ask about usefulness, clarity, portion balance, and serving logic.
- Pre-select or prepare sentence stems and visual vocabulary cards for terms such as prototype, revise, model, benchmark, equivalent fraction, and accuracy to support varied reading levels.
- Review each team’s poster-in-progress before class and note likely misconceptions in fraction reasoning, multiplication totals, or addition/subtraction so you can target support during revision time.
Student-facing instructions
You will turn your snack menu sketch into a draft poster and test whether other people can understand your math. Your team will need your poster draft, markers, sticky notes, a feedback tracker, and any math tools you want to use such as fraction strips, number lines, grid paper, or area model templates. First, you will practice a short explanation of your menu that shows your serving-size logic with words, drawings, and equations. During the carousel, you will either present your poster or visit another team’s poster. When you visit, your task is to listen carefully, ask one helpful question, and leave one sticky-note comment about clarity, balance, or mathematical accuracy. When you present, you will explain how your fractions and multiplication help prove your serving amounts. The cafeteria staff member will also visit and give user feedback about whether your menu would make sense in a real school snack setting. After both rounds, your team will sort feedback, choose at least three revision moves, record them on the tracker, and update your poster before the end of class. Your goal is to make your menu poster clearer, more balanced, and more mathematically correct for a real audience.
