Launch
Launch
Students will launch the Red Hook Regatta challenge through a community-connected design jam, test a quick paper-and-cardboard boat, compare early evidence about stability and strength, and leave with initial engineering questions and a clear understanding of the project workflow, criteria mindset, and reflection routines.
Day 1
Splash & Design Brief
Splash & Design Brief
Students will investigate boat performance through a fast design jam, analyze local stakeholder needs, study existing small-boat solutions, and produce a measurable engineering design brief that will guide concept selection and prototyping in the next phase.
Days 2 - 5
Select & Prototype
Select & Prototype
Students will compare multiple boat concepts against weighted criteria, justify one team design with evidence, build an initial Onshape model and RC system plan, and create a rapid prototype with a fair test plan tied to measurable performance goals.
Days 6 - 9
Retest & Showcase
Retest & Showcase
Students will run evidence-based retests of their Red Hook Regatta boat prototypes, analyze failure points with quantitative data, make targeted revisions in Onshape and physical components, and prepare a concise engineering showcase that explains criteria, trade-offs, optimization decisions, and remaining limitations.
Days 10 - 13
Showcase
Showcase
Students will publicly present and defend their 3D-printed Red Hook Regatta boat prototype to community partners, using Onshape visuals, test data, revision evidence, and engineering reasoning to show how their design became stronger, more stable, and more competition-ready. They will participate in a final showcase with live audience questions, document evidence of performance and trade-offs, and complete a concise reflection on technical learning, teamwork, and persistence.
