Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to deepen students' understanding of informational text structures, specifically cause and effect and problem and solution, through real-world applications. By engaging with local community stories and issues, students will develop critical thinking and narrative skills. The project aims to foster collaboration, reflection, and communication as students create and present digital story maps that connect classroom learning to community impact.

Learning goals

Students will understand and identify cause and effect, as well as problem and solution text structures, in various informational texts. They will apply these structures to create narratives addressing local community issues, demonstrating their comprehension through digital story maps. Students will enhance their critical thinking and reflection skills by engaging with community stories and participating in peer feedback sessions.

Standards
  • [Kentucky] RI.4.5 - Describe the overall structure, in a text or part of the text, the author uses to organize the events, ideas, concepts or information.

Products

Students will create interactive digital story maps illustrating local community issues using cause and effect and problem and solution text structures. Throughout the project, they will also develop digital portfolios that include written reflections and narrative examples. These products will be showcased during the library exhibition, allowing students to present their understanding and creativity to the community.

Launch

Begin with a "Text Structure Treasure Hunt" where students work in teams to follow clues around the classroom. Each clue is based on a different text structure and leads to a 'treasure' of books and articles. This activity will spark curiosity and introduce students to the concept of text structures in an engaging and interactive way.

Exhibition

Host a "Text Structure Showcase" at the local library where students present their digital story maps on tablets. Invite community members to interact with the students' work, providing feedback and engaging in discussions about the local issues highlighted. Create a space for students to explain their narratives and the text structures used, fostering a dialogue between students and attendees.
