Empathize
Empathize
Students will launch the Rounding Marketplace project by investigating how real people use rounding in daily decisions, conducting brief interviews, and creating an empathy map grounded in direct quotes and observations.
Define
Define
Students will synthesize interview notes and empathy maps to identify patterns in how people use rounding, then craft a clear, evidence-based "How Might We" problem statement that guides their upcoming solution design.
Ideate
Ideate
Students will generate and evaluate multiple solution ideas for helping real users (travelers and shoppers) make better decisions by rounding to the nearest ten or hundred, then create annotated concept sketches that connect directly to user needs and place value reasoning.
Prototype
Prototype
Students will build and revise a testable version of their Rounding Marketplace booth, using place value understanding to correctly round prices to the nearest 10 or 100. They will document feedback from users, make evidence-based revisions, and prepare a higher-fidelity prototype for final testing and presentation.
Test/Present
Test/Present
Students will validate their Rounding Marketplace booths with authentic users and present their full design journey during the Number Neighborhood exhibition, demonstrating how place value understanding and rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 supports better real-life decisions.
