Purpose

The purpose of this project is to enable students to creatively communicate the achievements of AAPI figures through integrated art and storytelling, fostering an appreciation for cultural diversity. Students will critically analyze and reflect on the historical impact of AAPI individuals while developing their communication, collaboration, and content expertise through hands-on activities. This experience is designed to inspire meaningful connections between past contributions and present-day societal issues, encouraging diverse perspectives and active community engagement.

Learning goals

Students will gain proficiency in historical research techniques to analyze the contributions and societal impact of AAPI figures, enhancing their understanding of cultural diversity. They will develop skills in creative writing and visual storytelling, translating research into narratives and visual symbols. Additionally, students will hone their presentation abilities through multimedia formats while practicing visual design principles to effectively communicate the legacies of notable AAPI individuals. The project also aims to deepen students' appreciation of AAPI contributions to societal change, encouraging thoughtful connections between past achievements and contemporary cultural issues.

Products

Students will create visually engaging one-pagers that showcase the achievements and stories of notable AAPI leaders, integrating research with creative art and design elements. Additionally, they will develop a multimedia presentation or short video, offering a narrative exploration of an AAPI figure's life and legacy. The project culminates in a community exhibition where the one-pagers are displayed, facilitating interaction and dialogue between students and visitors.

Launch

Begin with 'Cultural Immersion Day,' where students engage with various AAPI cultural elements such as music, dance, traditions, and foods to spark curiosity and build appreciation for the diversity and richness of AAPI heritage. Follow this immersive experience with an 'Artistic Inspirations Workshop,' guided by a visiting artist who demonstrates visual storytelling techniques, allowing students to sketch initial concepts for their one-pagers. Conclude with an 'AAPI Trivia Challenge,' involving a fun, competitive quiz focused on the lives and achievements of notable AAPI figures, thereby fueling research enthusiasm and fostering collaborative discussion among peers.

Exhibition

Kick off the 'Celebration of Legacy' event, transforming the learning space into a vibrant gallery walk where students display their one-pagers alongside insightful narrative comics. As students conduct interactive tours, they will articulate their artistic processes and historical insights, fostering community dialogue and reflection. Family members, local leaders, and peers are invited to engage directly with students' work in order to deepen understanding and appreciation of AAPI contributions to society.
