Purpose

This project aims to immerse middle school students in an exploration of historical women's contributions through the creation of digital photo collages. By employing public domain images from the U.S. Library of Congress, students collaboratively research and depict diverse narratives, enhancing their critical thinking and communication skills. The project encourages students to appreciate the power of art and imagery in driving societal change while fostering a deeper understanding of historical narratives through a hands-on, creative process.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively design and create digital collages that highlight the impactful contributions of historical women, utilizing public domain images and storytelling techniques. They will engage in critical analysis of historical imagery to identify diverse perspectives and enhance their understanding of societal norms and narratives. Through frequent reflection and peer critique, students will hone their communication skills, effectively presenting their collages and documenting the lives and legacies of the featured women. Throughout the process, they will apply digital tools creatively and explore innovative approaches to visually interpret history, culminating in a public exhibition of their work.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will create a digital mural that integrates imagery and narratives of diverse historical women, utilizing digital tools to embed interactive videos that explain each figure's impact and legacy. Additionally, they will develop a short documentary film that features their mixed media projects, incorporating archival footage from the Library of Congress to enhance storytelling. Throughout the project, students will collaborate to build an annotated digital portfolio, highlighting their creative decisions and linking them directly to essential questions about historical significance.

Launch

Begin with an interactive virtual museum tour highlighting the works of historical women artists such as Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keeffe, examining how these figures used art to challenge societal norms. Facilitate a guided discussion on the expressive techniques these artists used to convey powerful messages, sparking curiosity and setting the stage for their own collage projects. Transition into a hands-on workshop demonstrating digital collage-making tools, focusing on sourcing diverse public domain images from the U.S. Library of Congress, and encouraging initial exploration of themes and narratives students wish to represent.

Exhibition

Celebrate the culmination of the project with a 'Legacy Gallery Night,' where students invite family and community members to explore and discuss the historical collages, providing guided tours to elaborate on the stories depicted. Host a simultaneous ‘Digital Legacy Showcase’ online, inviting a broader audience to engage with the student work, with collaborations from local museums or libraries for additional reach and interaction. To add an interactive element, create a ‘Herstory Celebration’ featuring booths where students present live narrations and digital presentations, fostering an engaging dialogue around the historical women represented and their enduring impact.
