Purpose

Students will engage in real-world learning experiences that deepen their understanding of the dynamics between natural disasters and societal factors such as socioeconomic status and governance. They will develop innovative disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies by analyzing case studies, fostering critical thinking, and engaging with community members and experts. The project aims to cultivate effective communication skills, allowing students to express their findings through various mediums, ultimately promoting community resilience and informed decision-making.

Learning goals

Students will develop critical thinking abilities by analyzing data on natural hazards and examining the interplay of social, economic, and governance factors impacting disaster responses. They will hone effective communication skills through presenting their insights and proposed solutions during exhibitions and community events. Additionally, they will enhance problem-solving capabilities by collaborating on innovative mitigation strategies that address real-world challenges in their local communities. This process encourages reflective learning, as students assess the effectiveness of their proposals and explore the broader implications of disaster preparedness and resilience.

Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-ESS3-2 - Analyze and interpret data on natural hazards to forecast future catastrophic events and inform the development of technologies to mitigate their effects.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-ESS3-2 - Analyze and interpret data on natural hazards to forecast future catastrophic events and inform the development of technologies to mitigate their effects.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a variety of products that showcase their learning journey and insights. These include an interactive digital map that highlights local disaster vulnerabilities and resources, designed to engage visitors at the Disaster Insights Fair. Students will also produce informative infographics and posters illustrating historical disaster impact disparities, facilitating dialogue at the Community Resilience Showcase. Additionally, they will work together to produce a short documentary film capturing interviews with community leaders on resilience strategies, which will be screened at The Preparedness Film Festival. Finally, students will collaborate on a large-scale resilience mural, painted on a community wall, which will be unveiled with storytelling interpretations at The Resilience Mural Project event.

Launch

Begin the learning experience with a dynamic 'Disaster Simulation Day.' Students engage in realistic role-playing scenarios, experiencing evacuations and decision-making processes in various disaster situations such as wildfires, floods, and cyclones. This activity encourages peer collaboration and expert guidance, providing students with an immersive exploration of the complexities involved in disaster management. Through this hands-on simulation, students gain firsthand insight into the need for proactive and informed response strategies.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Disaster Insights Fair,' where they set up interactive booths that showcase their preparedness plans and multimedia proposals. Families, faculty, and community members can engage with student presentations and learn about innovative mitigation strategies tailored for local disaster risks. This event encourages dialogue and reflection while highlighting the students' depth of understanding and creative solutions developed during the project week.
