Purpose

This learning experience aims to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' joy and pride by immersing students in creative and collaborative projects. Students will explore and express the vibrant cultures of Indigenous communities through storytelling, art, and podcasting, fostering a deep emotional connection and understanding. Working alongside community partner Sofia from UNCI Intertribal, students will integrate cultural narratives and personal reflections, culminating in an exhibition that actively involves the community and encourages meaningful engagement.

Learning goals

Students will explore and express Indigenous joy and pride through collaborative creation of stories, art, and multimedia projects. They will practice critical thinking by researching and sharing inspiring Indigenous narratives while enhancing communication skills through presentations and reflections. Through teamwork and engaging with Sofia from UNCI Intertribal, students will deepen their understanding of cultural heritage and celebrate community connections, fostering socio-emotional growth and creativity.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively produce digital murals that visually capture Indigenous celebrations, showcased during the Interactive Mural Exhibition. Additionally, they will develop podcasts, integrating Sofia's reflections and their individual insights on Indigenous pride and cultural celebrations. These projects will be complemented by community newsletters or digital articles that feature narratives and stories garnered throughout the day, culminating in a class exhibition to share their artistic and multimedia works with peers and community members.

Launch

Begin the session with an 'Indigenous Joy Festival' where students collaborate with Sofia from UNCI Intertribal to create art pieces and storytelling performances that celebrate Indigenous culture. Each student or group will kickstart their project by designing a mural or collage representing joy and pride. The festival will feature diverse Indigenous experiences, allowing students and Sofia to share their creative ideas and collaboratively work on pieces that will be displayed later in the exhibition.

Exhibition

Organize an 'Interactive Mural Exhibition' in the school auditorium where students display their digital murals and collages, each representing Indigenous celebrations. Foster engagement by facilitating live reflection sessions with Sofia from UNCI Intertribal, encouraging visitors to contribute their reflections on the pieces. The exhibition will feature a short film screening of student-created documentaries, accompanied by a Q&A panel discussion to deepen community understanding and celebrate Indigenous pride and joy together.
