Purpose

"The Professional Launchpad" project immerses high school students in real-world job acquisition scenarios, enhancing their career readiness through practical industry-standard exercises. By engaging as industry consultants, students develop essential skills in resume writing, cover letters, and interview simulations, while applying critical thinking and effective communication. The experience emphasizes continuous learning, adaptability, and professionalism, preparing students to confidently navigate hiring processes and establish sustainable career paths with industry connections.

Learning goals

Students will create a digital portfolio that showcases their resume, cover letter, and recorded interview simulation, emphasizing effective communication and professionalism. They will engage in peer reviews and a mock career fair to develop critical thinking, collaboration, and adaptability. Through self-reflection journals, students will explore the impact of continuous learning on their career paths, ensuring the development of employability skills and alignment with professional standards.

Competencies
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

During the project, students will create a comprehensive digital portfolio that includes a professionally formatted resume, a well-articulated cover letter, and a recorded video interview simulation. They will refine these materials through peer reviews and enhancements based on employer feedback during a mock career fair. Additionally, students will maintain a reflection journal to document their insights and learning experiences, emphasizing how adaptability and continuous learning can shape their career paths.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, create an immersive job application simulation where students rotate through interactive stations replicating various stages of the hiring process. Begin by transforming the classroom into a professional environment, complete with role-play scenarios for resume writing, cover letter creation, and interview practice, guided by criteria provided by internship hosts. Encourage students to work collaboratively in teams as industry consultants, challenging them to strategically apply their skills to present themselves creatively for mock internship opportunities.

Exhibition

Students will host a mock career fair, inviting school counselors, staff, and local industry professionals to attend. During the fair, students present their digital portfolios, including their resume, cover letter, and recorded interview simulations. Attendees provide feedback on each student's materials and presentation, focusing on their readiness for the workforce and their ability to articulate their skills and experiences effectively. This public presentation allows students to showcase their learning while engaging in meaningful dialogue and reflection with real-world professionals.
