Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage middle school students in the process of storytelling through film, focusing on local unsung heroes and grassroots organizations tackling community issues. Students will explore critical themes of social justice and economic equality while developing competencies in communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. By immersing themselves in real-world narratives, they will gain a deeper understanding of local history and current efforts while creating meaningful and impactful films that resonate within their community.

Learning goals

Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they explore innovative approaches to storytelling that capture the essence of community-driven change. Through collaboration, they will co-design film projects, exercising shared decision-making and enhancing their relational agency. Effective communication will be fostered as students practice listening to understand diverse community narratives and present their learning through film screenings and discussions. Content expertise will be cultivated by researching local leaders' historical contributions, conducting authentic interviews, and applying filmmaking techniques to create impactful narratives that resonate with broader social justice themes.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Students will create a series of short films that tell the compelling stories of local unsung heroes and grassroots organizations. They will develop these films through collaborative research, interviews, and narrative storytelling techniques learned in workshops and labs. Additionally, students will design an interactive social justice mural and launch a digital magazine to further showcase the positive impact of these local inspirations on the community and beyond.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Community Heroes Expo,' where local organizations present their work and engage students in discussions about their initiatives. During this expo, students will meet potential subjects for their films, gaining insights into how grassroots efforts address community needs. Additionally, host a 'Storytelling Workshop' led by a professional filmmaker to introduce students to key narrative techniques, helping them prepare for creating impactful storytelling pieces. To immerse students in the art of filmmaking, set up a hands-on skills lab covering camera work, sound recording, and narrative development, ensuring they have the foundational skills for their own film projects.

Exhibition

Organize a ‘Community Film Festival’ at a local venue, inviting families, community leaders, and citizens to view students' films, celebrating their achievements in storytelling and social justice. Host a ‘Film Premiere Night’ in the school auditorium with a red carpet and panel discussions featuring invited guests and film subjects. Create an interactive ‘Digital Story Gallery’ in the school's corridors where visitors can engage with films and reflections, offering comments or questions digitally. Coordinate a ‘Storytime with Heroes’ day where the subjects of the films share their journey and engage in dialogue with students and attendees, fostering deeper connections and understanding.
