Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in the rich history and cultural significance of Thanksgiving, facilitating a deeper understanding through art and storytelling. By exploring gratitude's psychological benefits and engaging in creative expression, students enhance their communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. This project encourages students to reflect on their personal and cultural identities, reinforcing their academic mindset while fostering a meaningful connection with their community.

Learning goals

Students will deepen their understanding of Thanksgiving’s history by examining diverse cultural perspectives and indigenous contributions, promoting critical reflection on traditional narratives. They will enhance creative skills in art by crafting gratitude-based projects like spiral art and agamographs, integrating math concepts such as geometry and symmetry into their designs. Learners will strengthen collaboration and communication skills through co-designing projects, hosting community exhibitions, and engaging in peer feedback sessions. Through daily gratitude practices and cultural analysis, students will cultivate an academic mindset centered on identity, belonging, and relational agency.

Products

Students will create interactive gratitude storybooks featuring narratives of Thanksgiving history and personal reflections, showcased at exhibition stations with live peer demonstrations. They will develop gratitude spiral art and Thanksgiving agamographs, emphasizing cultural awareness and artistic technique, displayed prominently in community settings. These products will include a narrative timeline detailing key historical events of Thanksgiving, presented through both visual and written formats to illustrate students' understanding and creativity.

Launch

Gather students for a 'Generous Gratitude Exchange' event, where they create and exchange small, handmade tokens, such as gratitude cards or crafts, that symbolize Thanksgiving traditions or personal reflections on gratitude. This interactive activity sets the stage for the week's exploration of Thanksgiving's history and cultural expressions of thankfulness, fostering a sense of community and engagement from the outset. Students can accompany their tokens with brief explanations, highlighting their personal connections to the themes of gratitude and cultural heritage.

Exhibition

Create an 'Artistry and Appreciation' evening where students proudly present their gratitude spiral art and Thanksgiving agamographs in a community gallery setting, welcoming family, friends, and school personnel to view and participate in the reflective guestbook. Additionally, students can organize a 'Gratitude Showcase' with interactive stations that reveal the intricate artistic processes and historical insights behind their projects, featuring live demonstrations and engaging discussions. To foster ongoing interaction, design a 'Living Gratitude Wall' in the school corridor, beautifully displaying students' art pieces and reflections, inviting visitors to contribute their own expressions of gratitude and commentary.
