Purpose

This project aims to engage students in a culturally rich exploration of Diwali through art, fostering a deeper understanding of tradition and symbolism. By using recycled materials to craft their creations, students will not only celebrate the theme of 'Light Over Darkness' but also develop practical skills in collaboration, communication, and problem-solving. Through this hands-on, interactive experience, learners will connect with cultural narratives and reflect on their personal growth, while creating meaningful and expressive artwork.

Learning goals

Students will gain an understanding of Diwali's cultural significance by exploring traditional art forms like Rangoli and Diya paintings and their underlying stories and values. They will harness collaboration, effective communication, and critical thinking by experimenting with diverse materials to create meaningful art projects that embody the theme of 'Light Over Darkness'. Through reflective practices, students will articulate emotions and symbolism in their artwork while connecting personal growth with cultural expressions. The experiential project framework will also cultivate student leadership, providing opportunities to articulate and critique their creative journey and final product in dynamic exhibition settings.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a large interactive rangoli design that invites visitors to contribute their own elements, enhancing the 'Light Over Darkness' theme. Each student will design and showcase a personalized diya lamp, accompanied by a narrative describing the cultural significance and personal meaning attached to their work. As a capstone project, students will assemble a digital portfolio showcasing stages of development, artistic techniques, and reflective insights from their Diwali-themed artwork.

Launch

To kick off this learning experience, organize a 'Diwali Light Parade' where students collaboratively design and display parade floats made from recycled materials that symbolize 'Light Over Darkness.' Encourage students to incorporate the cultural elements of Rangoli designs and Diya painting on their floats, allowing them to explore the symbolism and colors associated with Diwali. This dynamic launch will ignite creativity and set the tone for the week-long project, fostering collaboration and shared decision-making from the outset.

Exhibition

Students guide an 'Art Walk of Light' display throughout school hallways, sharing insights into the cultural significance and creative process of each art piece. A 'Gallery of Culture and Light' invites visitors to contribute to communal rangoli designs and partake in diya lighting, fostering an interactive celebration of light. Additionally, students present their handmade paper lanterns depicting the journey from darkness to light and narrate their experiences, connecting cultural stories with personal growth.
