Students conduct a guided sound walk around the school or nearby community space. They list, sketch, or record at least five distinct sounds (natural, mechanical, human-made) and note how each sound makes them feel. Students discuss how these everyday sounds could inspire rhythms, beats, or themes for a composition.

| 2 | Begin the Sound Walk outside the classroom. Walk slowly and listen carefully to the different sounds. Encourage students to stop and record any sounds they find interesting. (15 min) |
| 3 | Pause halfway through the walk to discuss some of the sounds students have noted. Ask them to share how they feel about these sounds. (5 min) |
| 4 | Continue the Sound Walk, focusing on finding at least five distinct sounds and exploring new areas. (10 min) |
| 5 | Return to the classroom and have students sketch or draw a picture that represents their favorite sound. Discuss how these sounds might become part of a music piece. (10 min) |
Preparation (3 items)
- Prepare observation sheets and clipboards with space for students to write, sketch, or attach recordings.
- Familiarize yourself with the route for the Sound Walk to ensure it is safe and includes varied sound environments.
- Gather materials such as pencils and portable recording devices (if available) for students to use during the walk.
Student-facing instructions
You will go on a Sound Walk around the school. You'll need a clipboard with your observation sheet, a pencil, and something to record sounds with if you have it. Your task is to find and note at least five different sounds that you hear. Write or draw something about each sound and think about how it makes you feel.
