Purpose

Students will embark on a transformative journey, collaboratively exploring and celebrating the shared values of their school community through creative art projects. By engaging with community partners, they will hone artistic skills while building relationships and contributing to the collective growth of the school environment. Throughout the process, students will document their personal and academic development, fostering self-advocacy and motivation as they plan and envision their roles in the future of their community.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively develop multimedia collages that emphasize inclusion and diversity, fostering an understanding of their role in community growth. Through hands-on art-making sessions guided by community arts agencies, they'll explore the principles of design and composition, while learning to articulate their visions for the community in a 'Story of Us' storytelling marathon. They will cultivate skills in self-motivation, community mobilization, and self-advocacy as they plan and execute their projects, ultimately presenting their work in a 'Gallery of Growth' exhibition to reflect on their socio-emotional and academic development alongside community partners.
Competencies
  • Pursuing Goals - Planning for postsecondary (LL.SM.2.d)
  • Self-Advocacy - Visioning success (LL.SD.3.b)
  • Self-Motivation - Making learning joyful (LL.SD.1.c)
  • Pursuing Goals - Action planning (LL.SM.2.b)
  • Community Mobilization - Building relationships (GC.SAg.2.c)

Products

Students will create a multimedia collage that showcases the themes of inclusion and diversity, guided by community arts agencies using various art materials. This finished product will capture students’ interpretations and reflections on their role within the school community. Additionally, students will compile their digital portfolios, documenting their learning milestones and personal growth in relation to the essential question. These products will be shared and celebrated during the culmination event of the project.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a dynamic 'Story of Us' storytelling marathon where students actively share personal stories, visions, and goals for contributing to their school community. This launch will foster a sense of belonging and collective ambition, setting the stage for art-making sessions and project collaborations while immediately connecting students with the values of the community partners involved. Through this shared experience, students begin to visualize the impact they can have on their community, motivating them to embark on their artistic projects with purpose and enthusiasm.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Gallery of Growth' evening, inviting family members, school staff, and community partners to explore both digital and physical galleries exhibiting their multimedia collages. Each student will present their projects, discussing the creative process and the significance of inclusion and diversity as reflected in their work. The event will serve as a platform for students to articulate the connections between their academic and socio-emotional development with the school's community values.
Learning Journey
Empathize Define Ideate Prototype Test/Present
Empathize
Students will investigate the lived experiences, hopes, and needs of real members of their school community in order to ground their multimedia collage designs in authentic user evidence. Through storytelling, interview training, direct conversations with peers and staff, and structured empathy mapping, students will gather and document quotes, observations, and insights that will later inform a focused problem statement about inclusion and community growth.

Define
Students will synthesize empathy research into clear, evidence-based problem definitions that center real school community members’ needs. Through pattern analysis, affinity mapping, and critique, they will craft and refine a grounded How Might We statement and rationale that will guide ideation in the next phase.

Ideate
Students will generate a wide range of creative solutions for their Inclusion Impact Installation by using structured brainstorming, arts-based ideation strategies, and user-centered decision tools. They will move from divergent thinking to selecting 2–3 strong concepts grounded in real user evidence, preparing clear concept sketches that will guide prototyping in the next phase.

Prototype
Students will build, test, and refine low- to mid-fidelity multimedia collage prototypes grounded in real user evidence. Working individually and in teams, they will collaborate with a community arts agency to apply design principles, conduct structured user testing, document feedback, and iterate toward stronger inclusion-focused installations.
