Grading Required
Each group presents their prototype to the teacher as a usability check. Students state a claim such as “Plants need water to grow” and share one piece of evidence from their journals or sunlight observations. The teacher uses a simple rubric with picture icons to note if the model clearly shows plant needs, environment, and human impact before approving it to move to the improvement phase.

3 steps · 10 min| # | What teachers do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Review the plant journal wall and pick the key observation that best supports your claim about your plant's needs. Discuss with your group what would be a strong claim to defend. (10 min) |
| 2 | Prepare your prototype and journal evidence to present. Each group member will state their claim and provide evidence for their design choices, using picture icons on a rubric to check if all needs are shown accurately. (10 min) |
| 3 | Present your prototype and claim to the teacher. Listen to feedback and ensure the teacher checks your claim and evidence against the rubric for approval. (10 min) |
Preparation (3 items)
- Set up a display area with tables where students can showcase their prototypes and defense presentations.
- Prepare picture icon rubrics for students to use during their presentation and a visual aid demonstrating different plant needs.
- Ensure all necessary materials for prototype adjustments are available such as markers, crayons, glue, and paper.
Student-facing instructions
In teams, you'll use your plant journals to help defend why your plant design meets its needs. First, discuss your key observations and choose a strong claim. Show how your prototype model demonstrates your claim and changes the environment positively with sunlight. Present your claim and prototype to the teacher who will use a rubric to check if your model shows all plant needs accurately. Receive feedback and get ready to improve your design!
