Bullitt County High School Agriculture students visit to demonstrate how they plant seeds and water soil. Kindergarteners ask prepared questions such as “Why do plants need sunlight?” and “How do people help plants grow?” Students practice listening and noticing tools (watering cans, soil, garden beds).

# What teachers do
1 Welcome the Bullitt County High School Agriculture students and introduce them to the kindergarteners. (5 min)
2 Explain the purpose of the visit and briefly review what was learned in the previous activities about plant needs. (5 min)
3 High school students demonstrate planting techniques with the kindergarteners observing closely. (10 min)
4 Kindergarteners ask prepared questions such as “Why do plants need sunlight?” and “How do people help plants grow?” and listen to the answers. (5 min)
5 Allow the kindergarteners to practice using the tools, like watering cans and soil, with guidance from the high school students. (5 min)
Preparation (5 items)
  • Arrange for the high school agriculture students’ visit and coordinate the necessary permissions.
  • Prepare a list of simple, open-ended questions with the kindergarteners that they can ask the high school students.
  • Set up a demonstration area for the planting activity including soil, seeds, watering cans, and any other necessary materials.
  • Create name tags for kindergarteners and high school students to foster communication and interaction.
  • Ensure each kindergartener has their plant journal ready for documenting observations.

You will meet some older students today who know a lot about plants! They will show you how to plant seeds and take care of them. Your job is to watch closely, ask questions, and try planting yourself. Use your plant journal to draw and write about what you see.
