Purpose

This project aims to foster a deep appreciation and understanding of diverse cultural backgrounds within the classroom community. By engaging in storytelling, theatrical presentations, and reflective discussions, students will connect with cultural narratives that enrich their sense of identity and belonging. Through collaboration, communication, and creative expression, students will develop critical thinking skills as they explore the importance of diversity and inclusivity, ultimately enhancing their ability to work and learn with peers from various cultural contexts.

Learning goals

The learning goals focus on fostering critical thinking by exploring cultural diversity through authentic storytelling. Students will harness collaboration skills by co-designing theatrical presentations and engaging in shared decision-making with peers, using cultural attire and music to highlight diverse customs. Effective communication will be cultivated through guided storytelling, peer feedback, and discussions that emphasize empathy and understanding of diverse perspectives. Academic mindset will be strengthened as students identify with cultural narratives, fostering a sense of belonging and self-efficacy. Content expertise will be developed through hands-on projects where students create personal stories or fictional cultural tales, applying storytelling techniques and teamwork skills.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Throughout the project, students will collaboratively design and perform theatrical skits that highlight cultural stories visited during storytelling sessions. They will craft and illustrate personal reflections within their 'culture appreciation' book, capturing insights from various cultural fables and tales. At the culmination of the project, students will showcase their learning with a 'Global Gallery Walk,' where they present their theatrical skits and reflections, facilitating a deeper understanding of cultural diversity among invited guests.

Launch

Kick off the project with the 'Language Lab' where students rotate through stations, each introducing a simple phrase or greeting in a different language. Facilitate interaction among students as they practice and use the phrases with each other, creating a welcoming atmosphere of linguistic diversity. Use multimedia aids, such as audio recordings from community partners, to make the language practice more immersive and authentic, setting the stage for appreciating cultural diversity throughout the project.

Exhibition

For the exhibition, host a 'Global Gallery Walk' where each section of the classroom is dedicated to showcasing the stories, reflections, and artifacts related to the cultures studied. Students will serve as guides, sharing their theatrical skits, explaining cultural tales, and presenting their illustrated pages from the 'culture appreciation' book. Visitors, including community partners and family members, will engage with students, fostering conversations and deepening understanding of cultural diversity through authentic presentations and discussions.
