Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse students in cultural diversity through interactive learning experiences, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of various traditions. Starting with 'Culture in Motion Day', students will engage with community members through dance, storytelling, and art workshops. They will collaborate on activities such as creating a class blog and a collaborative mural, culminating in a 'Cultural Connection Carnival', where students showcase their projects. Through these processes, students will develop critical thinking, effective communication, and collaboration skills, enriching their personal and cultural identities.

Learning goals

Students will explore and appreciate cultural diversity by engaging with traditions and customs from various cultures, enhancing their understanding of community enrichment. Through the creation of a class cultural blog and participation in activities such as the 'Culture in Motion Day', they will document their learning, interview community members, and refine their communication and collaboration skills. They will develop storytelling skills by creating narratives that connect cultural identities with their personal experiences, culminating in a collaborative mural project and the 'Cultural Connection Carnival.' By engaging with local cultural centers and iterative peer feedback sessions, students will strengthen their academic mindset and content expertise.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Pr6.1.3a - Identify and explain how and where different cultures record and illustrate stories and history of life through art.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Cn11.1.3a - Recognize that responses to art change depending on knowledge of the time and place in which it was made.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Cn11.1.3.a - Identify connections to community, social issues and other content areas in drama/theatre work.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Cn10.3.a - Use personal experiences and knowledge to make connections to community and culture in a drama/theatre work.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MU:Cn11.1.3.a - Demonstrate understanding of relationships between music and the other arts, other disciplines, varied contexts, and daily life.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

In addition to the mural and class blog, students will work on individual cultural storytelling projects where they create narratives integrating personal and community identity. As part of their blog documentation, students will also design digital mini-books illustrating stories and cultural customs explored throughout the project. These activities culminate in their presentation at 'The Cultural Connection Carnival,' where they will share their work with the community.

Launch

Begin the learning experience with 'Culture in Motion Day,' an event designed to captivate students through vibrant, immersive activities. Invite community members to engage students in interactive sessions that include lively dance performances, captivating storytelling, and hands-on art demonstrations from a diverse range of cultures. Introduce a collaborative mural project where students will document their journey, choosing cultural symbols and elements to represent their learning. This engaging launch activity sets the foundation for exploration and collaboration throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will transform the school gym into 'The Cultural Connection Carnival', where they will host interactive stations sharing music, art, and drama presentations that reflect the cultural traditions they have explored. Each station will offer visitors an immersive experience, allowing them to engage with students' creative interpretations of diverse cultures through performances, hands-on activities, and personal narrations. An art activity where visitors can contribute to a community art piece inspired by the students' cultural mural will be provided. Students will present a collaborative project, such as a play, depicting various cultural stories and how they interconnect with their community's diversity. Visitors, including family members and community partners, will travel through this vibrant showcase, connecting with the students' work and the cultural narratives that have enriched their learning journey.
