Purpose

The learning experience aims to celebrate and deepen understanding of cultural diversity within the classroom through hands-on artistic exploration and community engagement. Students will investigate and illustrate diverse cultural stories and histories, developing their critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. By engaging with local artists and community theaters, students will create a shared event that fosters a sense of identity and belonging, culminating in a vibrant 'Culture Carnival' where they showcase their collaborative art, music, and theater projects.

Learning goals

Students will explore and appreciate cultural diversity by examining and creating art, music, and theater pieces that reflect various cultural traditions. They will practice critical thinking and problem-solving by addressing how these art forms convey cultural narratives and history. Through effective communication, students will express their understanding of different cultures and foster empathy by presenting their work and engaging in peer feedback sessions. By collaborating with peers and community partners, they will enhance their collaborative skills and contribute to a meaningful cultural celebration. Lastly, students will strengthen their academic mindset by connecting personal and community stories to broader cultural contexts, developing a sense of identity and belonging.

Products

Students will create a collaborative mural representing diverse cultural stories, each contributing a segment that reflects their narratives. Throughout the project, they will engage in weekly iterations of these artworks, incorporating peer feedback for improvement and cultural authenticity. For the final showcase at the Culture Carnival, students will produce mixed-media art pieces that depict their family heritage, complemented by short drama performances inspired by cultural tales explored in community theater workshops.

Launch

Embark on the 'Global Art Hunt' where students, divided into small groups, explore different areas of the school to discover and collect art pieces or images that represent diverse cultures. Each group will curate their findings into a mini-exhibition, sharing the origins, stories, and cultural significance of their selected art. This engaging hunt will ignite curiosity and set the stage for the upcoming cultural exploration, sparking conversations about the richness and variety of global artistry.

Exhibition

Host 'Culture Carnival,' a vibrant event where students showcase their music, art, and theater projects inspired by diverse cultures. Invite families and community members to join in the celebration with cultural foods and activities. During the event, students will present their mixed-media artworks that illustrate their family heritage and share cultural stories. Active participation from all students is encouraged to create an atmosphere of shared learning and appreciation for diversity.
