Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage 4th and 5th-grade students in a project-based exploration of hunger issues within their community. By researching local challenges, collaborating with community partners, and developing persuasive communication materials, students will deepen their understanding of food insecurity and contribute real-world solutions. This project aims to enhance students' critical thinking, empathy, and collaborative skills while empowering them to become active, informed agents of change in their community.

Learning goals

Students will develop and apply research skills to explore local hunger issues, enhancing their understanding of food insecurity through a variety of sources, including interviews and community data. They will strengthen collaboration, taking on diverse roles within teams to create impactful brochures or webpages, and will focus on building effective communication skills by presenting their findings to peers and community stakeholders. Critical thinking and problem-solving will be emphasized as students design and propose evidence-based solutions to hunger issues, while self-directed learning will be encouraged through reflection and feedback cycles.

Products

Students will develop a comprehensive digital portfolio featuring persuasive brochures or webpages, showcasing their research and highlighting solutions to local hunger issues. They will host a virtual gallery tour to present these multimedia projects, emphasizing the community's experiences with food insecurity. Additionally, students will create a collective 'Community Storybook' in digital format, compiling narratives and illustrations from interviews, offering unique insights into hunger challenges and community-driven solutions. For final presentations, they will launch an interactive digital magazine, combining articles, infographics, and decisive action steps to engage the broader community and drive meaningful change.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a "Voices from the Field" interview series. Invite community members affected by hunger to share their stories with students, who will then create character sketches illustrating these personal narratives. This initial engagement will lay the groundwork for empathy-driven research, helping students connect with the real-world context of hunger in their community and inspire thoughtful, solution-focused inquiry.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Community Hunger Awareness Fair" where they present their digital portfolios, brochures, and webpages at themed booths. The event will feature storytelling sessions and interactive experiences that showcase their research and proposed solutions. Community partners, families, and local stakeholders will be invited to engage with the students' work, providing feedback and discussing actionable steps for addressing hunger issues collaboratively. Additionally, a panel discussion with local agency representatives will facilitate further dialogue on sustaining community-driven efforts.
