Purpose

This project invites middle school students to actively explore and celebrate their cultural identities and personal stories through the art of collage, inspired by the works of Lorna Simpson. By examining Simpson's distinctive techniques and themes, students will investigate the role of art in conveying social messages and personal narratives. The purpose is to support students in forming meaningful connections between their artistic creations and their cultural experiences, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression in a collaborative setting.

Learning goals

Students will develop their skills in creating zentangle patterns and collages, enhancing their craftsmanship while expressing cultural identity and personal narratives through their art. They will critically analyze the historical and cultural significance of Lorna Simpson's work and incorporate these insights into their own projects. By collaborating with peers and getting constructive feedback, students will refine their ability to convey social messages, ultimately producing art that reflects their cultural experiences and personal stories.

Products

Throughout this project, students will create personalized storyboards using zentangle designs that depict their own cultural tales and experiences. These storyboards will serve as the foundation for an interactive virtual gallery, featuring audio narratives that students record to accompany their artwork. By week's end, students will have completed a multimedia collage, integrating their artistic creations with spoken narratives on cultural identity, exhibited as an interactive online showcase drawing inspiration from Lorna Simpson's influential techniques.

Launch

Kick off the project with an "Expressive Collage Kickoff," where students are introduced to Lorna Simpson's collages through a dynamic presentation. This will be followed by a group conversation encouraging students to explore how Simpson’s techniques can inspire them to express their own cultural stories. By examining key themes and creative processes in her work, students can start brainstorming ideas for their own projects that convey meaningful cultural narratives using techniques similar to those used by Simpson.

Exhibition

Organize a virtual 'Art & Identity' showcase on the school website, featuring student-created collages with zentangle elements along with recorded personal narratives that provide insights into their cultural experiences. Schedule an 'Expression Explosion' day, where students lead mini-workshops for younger peers, teaching the collage-making process while emphasizing cultural storytelling through art. Additionally, host an interactive online exhibition that displays their multimedia projects, allowing viewers to explore the rich intersections of students' identities and the artistic influences of Lorna Simpson.
